Chasing Dreams, Sharing Stories: Reflections on Our First Interview as The Chris Benton Show

Our First Interview Back

After a two-year hiatus, we just recorded our first interview back with Noah Thompson. Unlike our live episodes in the past, this one was pre-recorded and will be released next week. It’s been a while since I’ve done interviews, so I wasn’t sure if I’d feel rusty. Honestly, I was nervous because I wanted everything to go as planned—and thankfully, it did! The episode ran for 33 minutes and turned out to be a pretty heavy and impactful conversation.

During our conversation, Noah shared the inspiration behind his song, “Demons in My Whiskey.” I was floored to learn that it was inspired by the passing of his friend. Hearing that story brought back memories of my own 19-year battle with addiction and my journey to sobriety 17 years ago. It was a heartfelt moment that reminded me of the power of music and storytelling to connect us through shared struggles and triumphs.

Most Shows Will Still Be Live

While this episode with Noah was pre-recorded, most of our shows will continue to be live. There’s something special about the energy and authenticity of a live broadcast that I truly love, and it’s a core part of what makes our show unique. That said, having the flexibility to record when needed is also a great option, and I’m glad we could ease back into things this way.

Lessons from Over 600 Interviews

Through more than 600 interviews on our show, I’ve learned a lot. One of the biggest lessons is this: when I hit live or record, I enter a zone. For those 30-40 minutes, nothing else matters. I’m fully present, completely focused on the guest. That’s because I genuinely love having these conversations.

Rediscovering My Passion

This first recorded interview reminded me just how much I’ve missed doing the show. Two years ago, stepping away felt right for that season of life. But now, returning to the show feels equally right. It’s a calling I can’t ignore. Hosting the show has not only brought me joy but has also been a source of healing. Listening to the stories of our guests—whether filled with triumph or struggle—has inspired me deeply. One thing every guest has in common is their relentless pursuit of their dreams. That drive resonates with me because it’s exactly what Sandy and I are doing as well.

The Power of Shared Dreams

The show remains a big dream of mine. Sandy knows how much I want it to grow and reach a larger scale. Even though her name isn’t in the title anymore, she’s comfortable with that. It allows her to participate on her own terms, without feeling the pressure of expectations. For our episode with Noah, she was on the entire time, which I absolutely loved. For future episodes, she might only join for certain segments, and that’s perfectly fine. Her comfort and support enable me to keep pursuing what I’m called to do: having meaningful conversations with amazing guests.

Why We Chose the Entertainment Industry

We’ve focused on the entertainment industry for a couple of reasons. First, I’ve always had a deep love for it and built many contacts, especially in Nashville. Second, I believe this industry is often misunderstood. While it does have its challenges, it’s also filled with hardworking, passionate people chasing their dreams. Too often, society dismisses them with comments like, “Get a real job.” Through our show, I aim to share their stories and shine a light on what it truly takes to pursue such dreams.

How Stepping Away Shaped Us

Taking a break from the show offered perspective. It gave us the opportunity to focus on other areas of life and allowed us to approach our return with renewed energy and purpose. It reminded me that there’s a season for everything, and sometimes stepping back is necessary to come back stronger.

Key Takeaways From Our Journey

Here are some valuable lessons and insights I’ve gained from hosting over 600 interviews and returning to the show:

  1. Being Present Matters: Whether live or recorded, being fully present during interviews creates a connection that resonates with guests and audiences alike.
  2. Healing Through Stories: Listening to the diverse experiences of our guests has been a source of personal growth and healing. Their resilience inspires me to keep moving forward.
  3. Shared Dreams Unite Us: The show’s core is about dreamers—guests who chase their passions, and viewers who relate to their journeys. This shared pursuit creates a powerful bond.
  4. Flexibility Is Key: Allowing Sandy to participate in a way that makes her comfortable has strengthened our partnership both on and off the show.
  5. Misunderstood Industries: By focusing on the entertainment world, we’re helping to shift perceptions and highlight the dedication it takes to succeed in such a competitive space.
  6. It’s Never Too Late: Taking a break felt right at the time, but coming back now feels just as timely. There’s a season for everything, and sometimes stepping away allows you to return with renewed purpose.
  7. The Power of Music and Stories: Conversations like the one with Noah Thompson remind me how deeply stories and music can resonate, connecting us through shared pain and triumph.

Moving Forward

As we dive back into The Chris Benton Show, I’m excited about what lies ahead. Each guest brings a unique story that enriches our lives and inspires our audience. This show is more than a passion project; it’s a testament to the power of dreams, resilience, and faith. I’m grateful to continue this journey and can’t wait to see where it leads next.

To our listeners, stay tuned for the release of our interview with Noah Thompson and many more inspiring conversations to come!
